We’re pleased to celebrate UOK partner Rethink Mental Illness, whose Brighton Bereaved by Suicide service was named Specialist Grief Service of the Year at the London & Southeast Prestige Awards 2026/27. Rethink’s Surrey Support After Suicide service also received the award.
The judges recognised the services’ flexible, community-based approach to supporting people after a loss through suicide. They also highlighted the teams’ work to challenge the stigma that can surround suicide and grief.
Reflecting on the award in Rethink’s article, Lourdes Colclough, Head of Suicide Prevention at Rethink Mental Illness, said: “This work is incredibly difficult and complex and it can take its toll on staff.” She spoke about the compassion, connection and teamwork that help the teams support people through grief. “The stories heard are both harrowing and heartbreaking and can never be unheard – the team carry these with them and, through compassion, connection and teamwork, they are able to weave a net of care around those they are supporting together with our neighbourhood hubs,” she added.
Congratulations to everyone involved. We’re glad to see this sensitive and important work recognised. Read Rethink’s full article to hear more from the people behind the services.
Rethink also contributed to UOK’s World Suicide Prevention Day webinar, “Has the narrative changed?” earlier this month. The discussion included support after suicide bereavement, lived experience and safety planning. You can watch the recording and explore the resources, including information for people affected by suicide and those supporting someone else.
