The city’s largest annual International Women’s Day Celebration is back at Brighton Dome on Saturday 9 March.
Presented by BWC (Brighton Women’s Centre) this promises to be a wonderful day of uplifting and inclusive discussions, workshops, talks, arts and crafts, music, dance, causes, campaigns and fun for all the family.
Professional singer Aneesa Chaudhry is once again bringing her popular Sing Your Heart Out workshop to the Concert Hall stage and We Bop Choir will perform an uplifting set of a cappella pop and soul covers in glorious 4-part harmony. And the Lewes Sing Space Musical Theatre Choir will perform their favourite show tunes from stage and screen.
Minority mental health speaker Meral Alizada explores how women are the revolutionary curators of the future workplace in her talk: Kind workplaces and work-practices. Ali Booth discusses the symptoms of menopause and why it can be so problematic for some women; while women’s sustainable stylist and founder of the multi-award-winning Fine-tuned Wardrobe, Sophia Lorimer, hosts a workshop on dressing sustainably for success.
There’s something for young people as workshop facilitators from AudioActive’s singing/well-being project ‘Vocalise’ and the female led music technology project ‘Equaliser’ will present a taster session in music making for young people. And The Girls’ Network will provide a series of short mentoring ‘taster’ sessions for girls, giving them a chance to talk to a number of inspirational women who work in a variety of sectors and are at different stages in their careers.
Brighton-based, Tabather of Soulomorfi, will lead a Kundalini Yoga and Meditation workshop, culminating in a Gong Bath.
As part of the IWD celebration, a storytelling circle recounting people’s lived experiences of identity, intersectionality and feminism is also planned, with speakers invited to explore different aspects of their identity and reflect on how they intertwine and intersect.
Around The Dome there will also be a pop-up by Brighton Feminist Bookshop, a Cultural Sharing Area, drop-in activity tables with Feminist Origami and a showcase of young musicians from AudioActive.
The newly refurbished Corn Exchange will host over 20 marketplace stalls of local businesses, charities and community groups as well as an exhibition of artwork created by the See Red Women’s Workshop between 1974 – 1990. The feminist silkscreen poster collective grew out of a shared desire to combat sexist images of women and to create positive and challenging alternatives.
This free and inclusive event aims to celebrate and inspire women as well as raise awareness of BWC and our work supporting vulnerable women across Sussex. Join BWC Director Lisa Dando for a Conversation on the Importance of Women’s Centres as celebrates its 50th Birthday in 2024.
