Rethink Mental Illness – Survivors of Suicide

Survivors of Suicide (SOS)  is a free, confidential, and community-based service supporting adults in Brighton & Hove who have been affected by suicide.

About the service and what to expect

Rethink Mental Illness is a national charity who work to improve the lives of people severely affected by mental illness.

SOS  is a free, confidential, and community-based service supporting adults in Brighton & Hove who have been affected by suicide. Whether you are living with suicidal thoughts, have survived a suicide attempt, or are bereaved by suicide, we are here to help.

The service is built on compassion, flexibility, and lived experience. They understand that everyone’s journey is different, and we tailor our support to meet individual needs. This might include one-to-one emotional support, telephone check-ins, or joining our peer support group for those bereaved by suicide.

Rethink also offer practical help—such as writing letters to employers or GPs—and provide information and guidance around the inquest process. Their team works closely with local services including GPs, A&E, the Sussex Mental Health Line, and other voluntary organisations to ensure joined-up care and reduce the risk of crisis.

SOS is proud to be user-led and shaped by Experts by Experience. They involve volunteers and community voices in everything we do, ensuring our service remains responsive, respectful, and rooted in real-life understanding.

They support people offering long-term, flexible support that can last from a few months to over a year, depending on what each person needs. Our goal is to reduce the risk of suicide, promote wellbeing, and help people move forward with hope and resilience.

If you or someone you know could benefit from our support, please get in touch. You are not alone.
