Emma Mc Dermott

UOK Partnership Lead – Brighton & Hove

About me: I bring over two decades of experience in local government, focusing on community engagement and partnership building. My career began as a graduate trainee officer and evolved through roles dedicated to working with communities and the voluntary sector. From my early days as a grants officer for VCSE organisations in Tameside to leading Neighbourhood Renewal at Brighton & Hove City Council, and most recently serving as Head of Communities, Equality, and Third Sector at Brighton & Hove Council for 10 years, I’ve been driven by a commitment to enhancing lives through collaboration.

At Southdown, I’m excited to support the UOK partnership in delivering holistic, joined-up mental health services that place the wellbeing of service users and staff at the centre. My approach is all about enabling partnerships to thrive—building on shared goals, strategic planning, and impactful programme delivery. Together, I aim to help UOK become a beacon of excellence in community mental health support.

Why mental health and wellbeing are important to you as a cause?

Mental health is deeply personal to me. Like so many others, I’ve experienced its challenges both personally and through loved ones. While statutory services have been invaluable, it’s often the ongoing support from friends and community that makes the greatest difference. This fuels my passion for improving access to compassionate, effective mental health support across Sussex.

A quote / tip / personal reasoning that helps you better manage your mental health and wellbeing.

Outside of work, I find balance by staying active, getting out in nature, and connecting with others. On tough days, I remind myself of the power of small acts—reaching out to one person or doing one thing for someone else. It’s these connections that ground me in the belief that we’re all part of a caring community.

I feel privileged to use my energy and skills to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives through this role.
