The Carer’s Centre

A dedicated resource supporting unpaid family and friend carers of those with mental health challenges.

About the service and what to expect

At Changes Ahead, we understand how complex, emotional, and isolating it can be to care for someone with a mental health challenge. We provide 1:1 and group support to help you navigate these difficulties.

What We Offer:

Coffee & Chat Meetings
Sometimes, what we all need most is a hot drink with someone who gets it. Our informal coffee and chat meetings offer just that – a relaxed space where carers can connect, chat, share experiences and support each other. It’s a chance to step out of the daily routine and be with people who really understand.

Peer Reflection Groups
These small, supportive groups are a little deeper. 6-8 carers come together monthly for 6 months to reflect on specific challenges they’re facing. It is a space to explore situations closely and reflect on possible new approaches, with others who have had similar experiences.

Communication Tools for Carers Training
The training, grounded in Motivational Interviewing principles, is designed to help carers navigate difficult conversations and support their loved one’s recovery without burning out. It gives carers the practical tools to build healthier, more effective communication patterns.

Natural Retreat Days
Caring can be exhausting – emotionally and physically. That’s why we work with the fantastic team at Grow to offer Natural Retreat Days for Carers. These days give carers the space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with nature and themselves.

1:1 Support

As a UOK partner we’re able to offer 20 carers each year the chance to receive dedicated 1:1 support from a trained worker who also has lived experience as a mental health carer. Support sessions can take place at our office, a local café, or online via video or phone, whatever works best for you. It’s a safe space to talk about your experiences, the challenges of your caring role and how it’s impacting your life. You’ll also receive practical guidance on improving your relationship with the person you care for and support to help you look after your own wellbeing.

Why We Do What We Do

We believe that no unpaid carer should feel invisible or alone. Mental health journeys are complex – not only for those experiencing them but for the people around them. At Changes Ahead we aim to create a community of strength, empathy, and practical support, where experience is valued and wellbeing matters.
