Finding Connection Through Sound: A Musical UOK Partner Social

On 9 February, UOK partners came together for a special partner social that invited us to slow down, listen, and connect through music.

Rather than focusing on outcomes or performance, the session created space to simply experience sound and shared creativity. It was a reminder that wellbeing can be found not only in words or services, but also in moments of presence, play, and connection.

Guided by the wonderful Bela Emerson, partners explored the sounds of the cello, viola, and violin, not as instruments to master, but as tools for curiosity and expression. Together, we listened to what each instrument could offer, and what we could create collectively in the moment.

For many of us, music can bring up a familiar thought: “I’m not good at that.” Bela challenged that idea, inviting a different question instead: Can I simply enjoy something, without needing to be good at it?

Using body percussion, found sounds, voices, and simple percussion instruments, the group responded to what they could hear, creating ever-changing pieces of music that were unique to that moment. There was no right or wrong, just listening, responding, and being part of something shared.

Many partners reflected that they left the session feeling calmer and more grounded than when they arrived. It offered a chance to pause and reflect on personal wellbeing practices. We appreciate all our wonderful partners for being there and the beautifully facilitated session by Bela.

Music for Connection in the community

This session was a powerful example of how creative, inclusive spaces can support mental health and wellbeing. Music, when approached with curiosity rather than judgement, can help us reconnect with ourselves and with others.
