When the News Feels Heavy: Support Is Available

When stories about abuse or violence appear frequently in the media, they can bring up strong feelings, especially for people who have had difficult experiences in their own lives, whether recently or many years ago. Many people have been finding the news particularly difficult lately.

If you’ve been feeling unsettled, overwhelmed, or finding that certain headlines are hard to avoid, you’re not alone. It’s very common for news coverage to stir up memories, emotions, or physical reactions, even if you weren’t expecting it. For some people, this might show up as feeling anxious, angry, tired, or distracted. Others might notice they are avoiding the news entirely, or feeling more sensitive than usual. All of these reactions are valid responses to difficult topics.

One helpful reminder is that you are allowed to take breaks from the news and remember that support is available. There are services in Sussex and across the UK where you can speak to someone confidentially and at your own pace.

A reminder

You don’t have to carry difficult feelings alone. Talking to someone, a friend, family member, or support service can help lighten the weight and acknowledge that it’s there. If you notice that the news cycle is affecting your wellbeing, take small steps to look after yourself. This could include limiting exposure to news updates, spending time with people you trust, engaging in calming activities, or speaking to someone who can listen without judgement.

If you’re unsure where to start, UOK can help point you toward support that feels right for you. Visit the ‘Get Support’ tab on our website.
